Dave Durenberger began Tae Kwon Do at the age of 11, receiving his 1st Degree Black Belt 5 years later. He then expanded his martial arts horizons, coming to The Academy and becoming fully immersed in the training. Coach Dave earned instructor credentials in Filipino Martial Arts and Jun Fan Gung-Fu under Guro Dan Inosanto and was promoted to Associate Instructor in the arts in 2007. In 2002, he passed the Beginning Diploma test for Muay Thai under Ajarn Chai Sirisute. Coach Dave is an instructor (Guro) in Pekiti Tirsia under William McGrath of Pekiti Tirsia International. He also has a Brown Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Outside of the gym, Coach Dave has worked as a police officer for over 15 years, with experience in patrol, SWAT, and investigations. He is also the Lead Defensive Tactics Instructor and a Reality Based Training Instructor. He helped co-author the “PPD Neck Restraint” – a MN P.O.S.T. certified course for law enforcement personnel – alongside Head Coach Greg Nelson. Additionally, Coach Dave has taught defensive tactics to students in the law enforcement skills program for several semesters at a local college.
